For students of Maths and Statistics
This is a 10-credit postgraduate course, which equates to around 100 notional hours of study over the length of the course. It is part of the 60-credit semester 3 course Statistics Project and Dissertation (STATS5029P).
Aims of the Course
This course develops written and verbal presentation and communication skills in order to prepare students for their Semester 3 project.
Specifically, the course focuses on writing a report about a piece of data and speaking in the context of a short presentation and mini viva. The skills, language and knowledge students will develop will help to not only accurately describe data but also show critical thinking, in particular stance, towards it.
The skills, language and knowledge student learn will additionally support academic engagement and communication more generally.
Requirements of Entry
Requirements for entry and attendance will be communicated prior to course start.
Timetable & Attendance
This course takes place over Semester 1 and Semester 2, with 10 classes of 90 minutes in Semester 1, and 5 classes of 1 hour in Semester 2.
Assessment
Assessment is formative and includes academic writing and speaking tasks.
